BMW`S new X1 is a mixed bag. The X1 is the aspirational first step onto the Beemer SUV ladder, a school run-ready crossover and retirement wagon for active grandparents, all in one. It looks good, drives well and is priced keenly. It will probably sell lots as despite being noticeably smaller than the X3 , it's more extensive and inviting enough to steel sales from the bigger cars and probably from other manufactures too.

THE DRIVE that took James Bond from Nassau Airport to The Ocean Club lasted barely 30 seconds in Casino Royale . . . but that short passage of film was all it took to transform people's perception of a car for so long considered a safe bet for the family man or sales representatives.
